Newspaper

I've always enjoyed reading the paper, though I've never had it regularly delivered. When we moved here, I called up the local paper The Missoulian to get their promotional newcomer deal. So, we've received the paper every morning for the past five months. I really liked it to begin with and it helped us get acquainted with the community and find out about events. However, lately it's been really stressing me out.I've hardly read any books for months because every time I have a moment to read, there's the paper strewn about--or worse--still rolled neatly from the morning or even a few days ago, indicating no one has even browsed it. I feel somehow obligated to at least page through and read a few articles, not because we paid for it, but because this mass of words is constantly in front of me--indicting me for not making time to emerge from my domestic bubble and educate myself about Darfur or something. Pages are always covering the dining room table, strewn across the floor where Asher plays with it and gets all inky, overflowing the recycling bin. Needless to say, when the promotional period runs out, we will not be renewing our daily subscription--and I will probably miss it a little. I think we'll just get the Sunday paper because it's realistic to get that read before the next one comes, and Bridger can still have his comics.

Rachel,

I'm TOTALLY with you on this -- I did exactly the same thing when we moved to Lee, and felt so overwhelmed. I don't know where the guilt comes from (partly from my mom who will never recycle a paper until she's at least touched it -- even if she's been away for a week!) but I "let it go" and opted to get the "weekend only" delivery -- works great for us!
